cocktails anyone? the search for a bar cart begins...

If you've ever lived in a townhouse you know that you can end up with awkward, empty spaces and even fewer options to fill them. Additionally, you will run out of space in areas you need it most. For us - we are lacking counter space in the kitchen and have a weird open space at our stairwell landing. One of the issues with our counters is easily the handful of liquor bottles, mixers, etc. that reside there, so it made sense to try and find a solution to both problems.

Enter Mad Men. We are huge fans of the show, the style, and the culture. While watching I've always loved  the bar carts that are set up in each office. Always stocked with that particular character's liquor of choice, complete with ice bucket, and fantastic silver-rimmed glasses. I've found silver-rimmed glasses but finding a bar cart is much trickier...

While finding a bar cart isn't hard, finding one that is affordable is extremely difficult. I found my ideal cart, but sadly it is $2,000 so it will not be coming home with me. After plenty of searching I've learned that it doesn't matter if they're new, used, vintage, even rusty - they are pricey, at least several hundred dollars. And yes, that is even for the rusted ones! I'm not sure if the popularity of television shows like Mad Men, or just the popularity of all things "vintage" have sparked the high prices for these carts, but I have a hard time believing they have always been so outrageous.

Unless we get extremely lucky and find one at a crazy low price (doubtful) we will be hitting local flea markets and thrift shops in hopes of finding one in need of some TLC and a fresh coat of paint. Here are some of my favorites that we would love to have and that will certainly be the inspiration in the event we end up with a cart in need of a little rehab:

I've found some wooden "tea" carts and even a metal one that was not really our style (that needed a lot of lovin') so hopefully something better crops up soon. I would love to have something decent for the time being, and hopefully in the coming years we could upgrade to something even better -like some of those beauties above. If you run across anything online, especially something that looks like it has potential let me know!

  2. Oh, I love the one near the top (third down?) that looks like bamboo. I also like the next to last that has a spot for wine glasses and wine bottles. Guess it all depends on what kind of booze you need to store! This is a beautiful collection of photos and I hope you find exactly what you're looking for...happy hunting! 1. Thank you for stopping by! I love the faux bamboo carts, but those seem to the most expensive ones out there - they're all vintage. We DID find a cart that needed some attention and it is awesome - blog post coming soon!- although I would love some wine racks myself. Maybe in the future!

  4. I have one, it's just a wooden one from Sears, I think it was $120 or something. (you can see it here http://www.bourbonandglitter.com/2013/03/the-completely-organized-apartment-post.html) They still have it for sale. it's smaller but it gets the job done for me! I'd love to update to a metal and glass one, but they are very pricey, and this one is good for now!
